Barbie, Barbie, Barbie

Everywhere you turn these days we see Barbie, the beloved doll from the 60s to today. Every girl has had one and has spent hours of fun, playing house with her and her friends, Ken, Skipper, and more. How fun is her Dream House with all the bright colors and “funky” furniture? Even HGTV is building a real Barbie house. It’s lots of fun but don’t get caught up in the excitement of this fad when it comes to your home’s interior.

By definition a fad is “An intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived and without basis in the object’s qualities: a craze”. In Interior Design, it’s always best to avoid fads and instead look and follow trends. By definition a trend is “A general direction in which something is developing or changing”.

We at Rancho Interior Design always guide our clients toward the trends in design that will be lasting. When making an investment in your home interiors, you want to always consider how long the design elements will be relevant and current. So following fads is not advisable.

A Barbie inspired bedroom or playroom would be fine and fun for a young girl and absolutely appropriate. The investment in a child’s room is small compared to a main room in a home and the look will be fine for several years in a child’s life.

If you feel like you want to have fun and join in on the current fad in other rooms, you can by incorporating small touches in your space. Here are some ideas-add bright coloured accent pillows to a neutral sofa, bring in some fun accent pieces to display on your tables, add a fluffy poof and bright pattered area rug, change some of your artwork or add stick on wallpaper or decals that can easily be removed.  These touches can quickly transform your look without going overboard in cost and you can enjoy the look until the fad fades away.
