Everywhere you turn these days we see Barbie, the beloved doll from the 60s to today. Every girl has had one and has spent hours of fun, playing house with her and her friends, Ken, Skipper, and more. How fun is her Dream House with all the bright colors and “funky” furniture? Even HGTV is building a real Barbie house. It’s lots of fun but don’t get caught up in the excitement of this fad when it comes to your home’s interior.
By definition a fad is “An intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived and without basis in the object’s qualities: a craze”. In Interior Design, it’s always best to avoid fads and instead look and follow trends. By definition a trend is “A general direction in which something is developing or changing”.
We at Rancho Interior Design always guide our clients toward the trends in design that will be lasting. When making an investment in your home interiors, you want to always consider how long the design elements will be relevant and current. So following fads is not advisable.
A Barbie inspired bedroom or playroom would be fine and fun for a young girl and absolutely appropriate. The investment in a child’s room is small compared to a main room in a home and the look will be fine for several years in a child’s life.
If you feel like you want to have fun and join in on the current fad in other rooms, you can by incorporating small touches in your space. Here are some ideas-add bright coloured accent pillows to a neutral sofa, bring in some fun accent pieces to display on your tables, add a fluffy poof and bright pattered area rug, change some of your artwork or add stick on wallpaper or decals that can easily be removed. These touches can quickly transform your look without going overboard in cost and you can enjoy the look until the fad fades away.
Coastal Design: Giving your home a Coastal Design look- Are you dreaming of a tranquil and breezy ambiance that captures the essence of coastal living? Look no further than the captivating world of Coastal Design. With its soothing color palettes, natural textures, and coastal-inspired elements, this design style can transport you to a serene beachside retreat right within the comfort of your own home. At Rancho Interior Design, we are passionate about helping you bring the refreshing allure of Coastal Design into your living space.
Coastal Design Furnishings
Coastal Design embodies the essence of coastal living, drawing inspiration from the beauty of the sea, sun, and sand. It’s all about creating an atmosphere that reflects the relaxed and carefree lifestyle associated with coastal regions. By incorporating the right elements and following a few key principles, you can transform your home into a coastal haven that exudes tranquility and elegance.
Color plays a crucial role in Coastal Design, as it sets the foundation for the entire aesthetic. Soft, muted tones reminiscent of the ocean, sky, and sandy beaches are central to this style. Think shades of soft blues, calming greens, sandy neutrals, and crisp whites. These hues create a soothing backdrop that allows the mind to unwind and the spirit to rejuvenate.
To further enhance the coastal vibe, natural textures take center stage in Coastal Design. Incorporate materials such as weathered wood, rattan, jute, and seagrass to infuse your space with a sense of organic beauty. These textures bring warmth and depth, while also evoking a connection to nature. Woven baskets, driftwood accents, and textured rugs are just a few examples of how to incorporate these elements into your home.
When it comes to furnishings, Coastal Design embraces comfort and a relaxed atmosphere. Opt for plush seating with slipcovers in light fabrics like linen or cotton. Soft, oversized pillows adorned with nautical motifs or coastal patterns add a touch of whimsy and create an inviting feel. Incorporate natural light as much as possible, allowing it to flow through sheer curtains or blinds, accentuating the airy ambiance that is characteristic of coastal spaces.
Coastal Design Accessories
Decorative accents are where you can truly bring the coastal theme to life. Seashells, coral, and coastal artwork are popular choices. Fill glass jars with beach sand or display a collection of seashells on a shelf or coffee table. Hang coastal-inspired artwork depicting seascapes or playful marine life. These small touches will infuse your home with the spirit of the coast and add a personal touch to your overall design.
At Rancho Interior Design, we believe that every home has the potential to reflect your unique style and create a haven that resonates with your soul. Our experienced designer understands the intricacies of Coastal Design and can guide you through the process of transforming your space into a coastal oasis. From selecting the perfect color palette to curating the ideal mix of textures and accents, we are dedicated to bringing your vision to life.

I’ve always loved the beach having grown up close to the Long Island Sound and spending all my childhood summers there. It’s no wonder that my home reflects my love of water and the beach. I now live close to the Pacific Ocean and my love of Coastal design continues and I’m not alone! Coastal design is very popular and I have many clients asking for that “vibe”.
My interpretation of Coastal Design includes lots of neutrals and whites with pops of blues and greens. I like to incorporate natural materials, wood tables with light finishes, woven wood materials for window treatments, benches, rugs and accessories, comfy sofas and chairs in light colored fabrics and textured area rugs. A cool idea is using grasscloth wallpaper for an accent wall to add texture and interest. And of course artwork that brings more color into the space and defines the style.
Have fun with this cool, timeless trend. Your rooms will have a comfortable, relaxed feeling like being on vacation at your favorite beach resort. Here are some examples of the Coastal vibe. Call us to help you get the feeling for your home.
